COMMONWEALTH Games medallist Laura Halford is looking to add to her medal collection next as she competes in the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships.

The competition is set to take place in Bulgaria, where Cricklade's Halford will be joined by rising British stars Gemma Frizelle and Hannah Martin.

More than 350 athletes have descended on the capital of Sofia, which is the first time the city has hosted the competition.

Halford, who trains in Wales, has claimed the British title for the last five years, in addition to success with Team Wales at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast, where she most recently collected a silver medal in the hoop discipline.

The former Esprit Swindon gymnast, who is based out of Llanelli Rhythmic Academy, is the most senior representative as Frizelle will be competing in her first World Championships, fresh off the back of a successful 2018 where medalled in each apparatus final at the British Championships, and also made the hoop final at the Commonwealth Games for Team Wales.

Martin is the youngest member of the British team that heads to Sofia but does so after narrowly missing out on British all-around glory early this year.

She also finished seventh all-around at the Commonwealth Games for Team England.

Halford's preparation hit a snag after she revealed on social media that she had arrived in Bulgaria, but her hoops had not.

Her tournament will begin on Monday, where she takes place in the individual hoop and ball qualification.
