NATIONWIDE A made a winning start to their Swindon & District League Division One campaign at the weekend when beating Lawn A.

Experienced Nationwide were restricted in the opening quarter and held to 11-11 before the second quarter saw both sides only manage to register six points apiece.

Chances came and went for both teams as evidence of rusty play following the lengthy summer break continued to show.

However, Lawn fell just short of their rivals, eventually losing 41-38, with Lawn’s Florrie Green picking up player of the match honours.

In Division Two, Lawn B made a winning start when beating Raychem D 51-34.

The first quarter saw both teams jostle for the lead while attempting to find a foothold in the game.

Strong pockets of play in the concluding two quarters granted Lawn B with the opportunity to extend their lead, which they successfully completed to eventually win by 17 points.

Meanwhile, Fairford hosted newly-promoted Purton, with Alice Mundy providing the platform required for the home side to establish an early lead.

Purton were able to resist Fairford’s charge in the third quarter – eventually winning that particular block of play by one goal.

However, tidy finishing in the concluding moments allowed Fairford to register a 37-24 victory.

Division Three saw wins for Royal Wootton Bassett, who defeated Lawn C 49-25, while Nationwide C made light work of Fairford B to win their opening contest 45-15.

Jess Chandler was the star of the show for Royal Wootton Bassett C as they defeated Nationwide D 25-18 in Division Five.
