BOSS Phil Brown is keeping his feet firmly on the ground when it comes to Swindon Town’s increasingly impressive away record this season.

Town’s 3-0 win away at Yeovil Town on Saturday was their second success in a row on the road in League Two following the 1-0 victory at Morecambe on September 8, and made it four away games unbeaten in total.

In fact, Brown’s side have not lost on their travels since the first away day of the season – a 4-1 defeat at Lincoln City back on August 11.

Although encouraged by his side’s resolve in fixtures away from the Energy Check County Ground, former Premier League manager Brown says being able to compete on the road is part and parcel of the game.

“That is back-to-back away victories based on clean sheets,” said Brown.

“The one thing football tells you is that you can never only play in and around your own camp. When I was in with Southend, I think we travelled something like 8,800 miles one season.

“We can’t do anything about it. If we have to head north to Oldham, then we go to Oldham, if we have to head south to Exeter, then we go to Exeter. We just have to get on the journeys.

“We have a good group who enjoy each other’s company, and that helps.”

As well as united camp, Brown believes another factor behind Swindon’s success is competition for places.

The Town boss felt the week leading up to the Yeovil fixture was one of the best his troops have had on the training pitch this season, and believes players currently in the team know they have to perform at their best or risk losing their places.

“We made reference to the team on the Thursday before the Yeovil game and everyone was buzzing and the 11 that weren’t playing were bang at it,” said Brown.

“It was like everyone wanted a place and I think the 11 that started recognised that and instead of cracking under the pressure, they stood up to it and grabbed a hold of the shirt.”

Town are back at the County Ground on Saturday when they host Oldham Athletic, and having turned in a below-par performance at home to Bury following their previous away win at Morecambe, Brown is keen to avoid a similar drop in standard.

“We are not getting ahead of ourselves at all. We are moving in the right direction,” said Brown.

“There have only been a couple of occasions in the nine league games where we weren’t at the races and we got our comeuppance in both of those games.

“There is a lesson there for everybody. If we are bang at it, we will be a match for anybody, but if you take your foot off the gas, you will get your comeuppance in any division.”
