SWINDON Town manager Phil Brown will determine on Friday whether or not top scorer Michael Doughty will be fit to face Oldham Athletic this weekend, although Dion Conroy is definitely free to make his own injury comeback.

Midfielder Doughty has scored six times in nine appearances since returning to Swindon on a free transfer over the summer but has missed their last two League Two fixtures with a hip complaint.

Conroy himself has only featured three times this term due to a knee injury, having not played at all since the second league match of the season back on August 11.

However, the central defender has taken a full part in training this week and Brown has confirmed he is ready to face Oldham at the Energy Check County Ground on Saturday.

Doughty has yet to join up with full training but Brown hopes to introduce the 25-year-old back into the fold today before making a final verdict on his availability tomorrow.

“There are no new concerns. I think where Michael is concerned, he will put his case forward to be available for selection,” said Brown.

“I am still waiting to hear from the physio and I think tomorrow we will know if we have a yay or a nay if Michael can play.

“He loosened up on Monday and trained with the physio and fitness coach on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he was again with the physio, and today I am hoping he will be involved with the first team.”

Swindon were 3-0 winners away at Yeovil Town last weekend and given the quality of the team’s performance at Huish Park, Brown admits he faces a quandary over whether or not to slot Doughty straight back into the side even if he does prove his fitness.

“That in itself suggests we did something right last weekend,” said Brown.

“Not just the three goals that we scored but the nature of the game, the nature of the performance and the clean sheet as well.

“I have said I always reward goalkeepers and defenders with clean sheets that they keep their shirts – that applies to the whole team.”

Conroy’s injury issues this term come in the wake of a shortened 2017-18 campaign, with knee surgery ending his season prematurely last September.

Brown says he has had to be cautious with Conroy’s comeback but has seen enough signs that the problems are over for the former Chelsea youngster.

“Dion is available. As a manager, you can be a little bit anxious with a player of Dion’s capabilities and push him in too early,” said Brown.

“He has now had a good week to 10 days out of the treatment room and on the training ground.

“He had a behind-closed-doors game on Tuesday for 60 minutes and that brought me to the conclusion that he is through and is available for selection for Saturday.”
