HOSTS Westlecot were the most successful club at the annual 2018 Swindon & District men’s finals staged on their green in Old Town.

They were victorious in four of the 10 events contested with Town Gardens next best with two winners.

Single successes were recorded by Wanborough, Royal Wootton Bassett and Haydon Wick.

One of the scheduled finals, the mixed triples, was not played owing to illness and has to be re-arranged.

Individually, John Thomas (Westlecot) completed a double, winning the over 60s singles and skipping his rink to victory in the fours.

Tom Pittuck retained the men’s singles and then combining with his father Barry to lift the pairs trophy as well.

Thomas began his quest for a double by retaining the Over 60s singles against Royal Wootton Bassett’s John Williamson.

Apart from trailing 3-2 after two ends Thomas was in control throughout.

He led 9-3 after five ends, 18-3 at 11 and won 21-7 after 14 ends.

Thomas’ other success was achieved in an all-Westlecot fours affair that needed an extra end to decide the final outcome.

The foursome of John Richman, Dave Matthews, Mike Shawyer and Thomas led Mike Jackson’s rink 4-3 after five ends but were 11-7 down after 10.

They rallied to go back in front 14-11 at 15 ends and were still up 16-13 at 18 but dropped a four on the 21st end to allow Jackson to tie the game 18-18 and force an extra end. Thomas collected a single on the extra end to grab a 19-18 success and complete a personal double.

Mark Richman (Westlecot) retained his Officers singles title beating Wroughton’s Philip Cook 21-14.

Richman was tied 3-3 at five ends. A maximum count of four saw him move 11-7 up at 11 ends but was pegged back all square 12-12 at 15 and 14-14 at 18.

Another maximum count of four saw him claim a 21-14 after 22 ends.

Ben Choules claimed Westlecot’s fourth win beating former Highworth club colleague Sean Etherington in a close U25 encounter 21-18.

Choules led 5-0 after three ends and 11-7 at nine. Etherington then shot ahead winning the next five ends to lead 18-11 after 14 ends.

Choules re-grouped to score ten unopposed shots to win the match 21-18 after 18 topsy turvy ends.

Tom Pittuck from Town Gardens was always in control of the main singles final against Swindon’s Mickey Pearce.

He led 7-1 at five ends and 16-7 at 13 before sealing a 21-12 win at 19.

Pittuck had earlier partnered his dad Barry to the pairs title against Westlecot duo Ian Jefferies and Hugh Dawson.

The Pittucks led 6-1 after five ends but trailed 10-6 at 10 after losing five consecutive ends. Back they came with six winning ends in a row to lead 16-10 at 16 ends and take the pairs title 19-14 at 21.

Wanborough’s Robbie Ferguson retained his champion of champions title defeating Highworth’s Richard Young 21-17.

Ferguson led 6-2 after five ends but was tied 8-8 at 10 after dropping a four. Young grabbed the initiative to go 15-10 up at 17 ends only for Ferguson to respond by winning seven of the next eight ends scoring 11 shots to two to win 21-17.

Royal Wootton Bassett’s lone success came a few days later in the re-arranged triples final which was a very one-sided affair.

Bassett only led 4-3 after five ends against Haydon Wick but then stormed away leading 12-5 at 10 ends and 21-5 at 15 when a halt came to the proceedings.

The Eddie Wells charity four rink triples saw Haydon Wick triumph 76-68 over Wanborough taking the honours in three of the four triples games.
