SWINDON Wildcats player-coach Aaron Nell insists lessons can be learned from Saturday’s 6-4 home win against Telford Tigers in the Autumn Cup.

First-period goals from Floyd Taylor, Loris Taylor, Sam Jones plus Adam Harding’s brace handed the Wildcats a five-goal advantage at the end of the first period.

But Tigers’ team talk between periods dramatically shifted the game’s momentum in favour of the visitors, who quickly cut Swindon’s lead to three, following markers from Jason Silverthorn and Andy McKinney.

Silverthorn struck again at the start of the third period before Max Birbraer’s timely finish from Nell’s accurate pass secured Swindon a valuable two points.

The result – which 17 minutes into the game was seemingly secure from Swindon’s point of view – ensured Nell’s troops advance to the next stage of the Autumn Cup, a title they won last season.

Nell said: “We were good in the first period (on Saturday), fortunately we were that good in the first that we made it tough for them to find a way back.

“We got the win, and to get three wins in a row has been great – we’re just happy to go through to the next round.

“Telford weren’t very good in the first, then it was a complete role reversal in the second.

“We need to learn to keep on pushing. The third period was a lot better.”

Renny Marr’s suspension meant Tyler Perre took his place between the pipes once more.

Nell was pleasantly surprised by the teenager’s performance and equally pleased with the clinical edge his side possessed in front of net.

He said: “If you told me on Thursday morning about Renny (Marr’s) suspension that would win our next three games I would’ve bitten someone’s hand off. We’re delighted.

“We were excellent in front of net.

“We went to the good areas of the ice to score goals and Sam (Jones) scored a nice goal, though I didn’t see it but heard about it.

“Luckily the first period got us through the last two – we kept on pushing and we will learn from it.”

Last night’s return fixture though saw Wildcats lost 5-3.

Andy McKinney but the home side ahead after just seven minutes before Edgar Bebris levelled the game before the end of the first period.

Scott McKenzie reestablished Tigers’ one-goal lead before McKinney’s second stretched that lead to two.

Despite the efforts of Aaron Nell, who scored twice in the third period, Tigers wrapped up the win with a pair of goals inside the concluding three minutes.
