PERFORMANCES away from home must improve if Swindon Wildcats are to unlock the consistency required to earn silverware this season, admits player-coach Aaron Nell.

Losses at Hull Pirates and Telford Tigers in the Autumn Cup mean Wildcats have won one of their three competitive away fixtures to date, while the club’s home form remains at 100 per cent.

Qualification from the Autumn Cup group stage prompts the start of Wildcats’ NIHL South One campaign this weekend, where they will face Kent-based Invicta Dynamos at home on Saturday before the return fixture takes place on Sunday.

And Nell, who netted twice in Swindon’s away fixture on Sunday, wants to see a reaction from his roster following last weekend’s defeat on the road.

He said: “We need to learn that if we do have a strong first period - especially at home - then we need to keep on pushing.

“It’s something we’ll learn from and improve on, so we can be better in the future.

“The away game was tough for us, Telford is a tough rink to play in.

“There wasn’t much riding on the game either. But I was happy with how the guys played, to be honest.

“We obviously wanted to win, and the guys worked hard.

“They scored two powerplay goals and scored a nice one at the end to win the game, that’s tough for us.

“We were already through, so the game didn’t mean the world to us.

“But we need to make sure that our performances on the road in the future are better than what they have been so far.”

Wildcats will be boosted this weekend by the return of netminder Renny Marr, who has finished serving his suspension.

Marr was given a match penalty in the 51st minute during Wildcats’ tie against Hull Pirates after retaliating to James Archer.

His suspension granted both Michael Crisp and Tyler Perre a chance in goal.

And while Nell was impressed with the performances of his backup netminders, the 28-year-old admitted welcoming Renny back between the pipes will be a big boost to the Link Centre outfit.

He said: “It’s a big boost having Renny (Marr).

“He’s had a bit of rest, hopefully that will be of benefit further down the season.

“We’ve got a good team, and if we’re consistent we have a strong chance of being successful.

“Basingstoke won the league last season because they were the most consistent team.

“The same applies this year.”
