WESTBURY United joint boss Neil Kirkpatrick was encouraged by the reaction displayed by his side on Tuesday night when coming from behind to beat Royal Wootton Bassett 3-2 in the Wiltshire Senior Cup.

Callum Demkiv equalised for Westbury after the hosts took the lead before Sam Collier’s Bassett restored their one-goal advantage before half-time.

Jamie Jordan and Francois Allen hit the target in the second half though to confirm Westbury’s place in the competition’s second round.

The performance pleased Kirkpatrick, who admitted he was left deeply disappointed by the ‘shambolic’ display against Saltash United in the FA Vase just four days earlier.

He said: “We played very well (against Royal Wootton Bassett). We didn’t really give them a kick in the first half but we went into half time 2-1 down.

“It was frustrating but we had a young side out, and they showed some really good character to pull it back in the second half.

“I’m pleased with the character in the team, they’re a young group and they’re learning. There’s some great desire in the team.

“Winning is a habit, and it was great to bounce back from the shambles of Saturday.”

Westbury return to Toolstation Premier Division action on Saturday when hosting mid-table Hallen, a game which Kirkpatrick insists his side cannot afford to take lightly.

Unbeaten in their opening eight games with all 24 points available to them secured, Kirkpatrick insists dropping points against Hallen will undo the hard work established from earlier in the season.

“People will look at the start that we’ve made in the league and will presume that we’ll be winning this weekend, but it never works like that,” said Kirkpatrick.

“Tomorrow is our biggest game of the season.

“All other games are irrelevant if we don’t put a shift in on Saturday.

“We’re massively grounded despite our good start, we’ve overachieved if you like.

“But once you’re in this situation you want to keep your form going. It’s a new group and they’ve all jelled well together.

“Every game has been a close affair though where we’ve just managed to come out on top.

“But I really want to bounce back this Saturday after our loss against Saltash United in the Vase last weekend, that was a shambles and I was disappointed.”

Elsewhere in the Wiltshire Senior Cup, Bradford Town made progress with a 3-1 win away at Corsham.

Warminster were also in action, they lost 3-0 at home to Shrewton.
