AARON Nell has urged his Swindon Wildcats troops to keep their feet on the ground despite a blistering start to the new NIHL South One season.

Back-to-back successes at home to Raiders and away to Bracknell Bees last weekend took the Cats’ tally to four wins from four games in the league so far this term.

They remain the only side to boast an unblemished record in NIHL South, although Swindon have played the joint-fewest fixtures.

Nell’s side could climb from their current position of third in the table up to second this weekend as they face a double-header against the side immediately above them in the table – Streatham.

Although delighted by the Cats’ form, the player-coach is well aware that it is much too early to read too deeply into the form book.

“We couldn’t really ask for much more than the start we have had to the season. We were very happy with last weekend. We have got some real momentum behind us right now,” said Nell.

“We are really happy with the way things have been going but we need to keep it up and make sure we carry on playing as hard as possible.

“It is a 42-game season so there is a long way to go. We have had four good results in the league but that is all it is at this stage.

“It is still very early, but we’re thrilled to have hit our stride. We need to keep our feet on the ground and keeping pushing. We just have to take it one weekend at a time.”

Swindon claimed a twin win over Streatham during pre-season but Nell expects a tough battle to unfold against the south London side this weekend, starting at the Link Centre on Saturday.

Streatham have averaged a haul of four goals a game over the eight league matches they have played this term, so Nell has called for the Cats to be on their toes.

“Streatham are second in the league and they have had some really good results already this season. They have really improved since last season and they are on a real high right now,” said Nell.

“They have won five games this season and lost three – and the three they have lost have either been by one goal or in overtime, so they are a tough team to play.

“It should be a good weekend of hockey and two good games.

“Last weekend was probably the toughest weekend we have had so far and this one will be right up there too.

“But we have had a few tough weekends already because of the matches we played in the Autumn Trophy at the start of the season, so we are prepared for anything.”
