SID Nelson says the return of David Flitcroft to the Energy Check County Ground this afternoon has no bearing on the current Swindon Town squad.

Former Town boss Flitcroft makes his first return to the club he departed in March this afternoon when he brings new side Mansfield Town to Wiltshire.

The Swindon squad has had a vast overhaul since Flitcroft’s exit earlier this year, with central defender Sid Nelson one of 10 in Phil Brown’s first-team set-up not on the books under the former boss.

The 22-year-old therefore says the significance of this weekend’s meeting is much greater to those outside of the Town camp than those presently inside it.

“There has been no talk, it is all about us,” said Nelson, who is on loan at Town from Championship side Millwall until January.

“That is all outside talk and it is nothing to worry about for us. We just need to worry about ourselves and putting in a performance.

“It is a talked about thing as he was the manager here last year, but it doesn’t involve any of us. It has not come up once, it has just been about us.”

Swindon and Mansfield are separated by a just single point and place in the League Two table, with Brown’s side the higher in 13th although they have played two games more.

The Stags have lost just once in the league compared to the four defeats suffered by Swindon, but their progress has been hindered by a seven draws.

First and foremost, Mansfield look a side that are hard to beat, although Nelson says Town’s focus as primarily been on their own game in the build-up.

“At the moment, it is about focusing on us,” said Nelson.

“We know their ins and outs and what they are good at and what they are not, but it is mainly about concentrating on ourselves.

“They are a good team, they have got good players, but it is about us, training well and putting everything we have been doing in training into practice on a matchday.”

Town’s first two home matches in the league this season ended in thrilling 3-2 victories over Macclesfield Town and Tranmere Rovers, but the next four have yielded just three points – all via draws.

Nelson would love a return to winning ways in front of the Swindon supporters, and doing so in more a straightforward manner than they have done so far would be the ideal scenario.

“We want to be keeping clean sheets and not be as dramatic and try to make it as easy as possible,” said Nelson.

“It was two great wins, so we know we can put in performances and it is just about finding that consistency.”
