NEW Swindon Town manager Richie Wellens will give all of his players the chance to impress before thinking about the prospect of strengthening the squad in January.

Wellens has now run the rule over his players for two days following his appointment as Town manager on Tuesday morning.

The 38-year-old will see them in competitive action for the first time on Saturday when he oversees his first match in charge at home to Carlisle United in League Two.

Former Oldham Athletic boss Wellens says his first priority will be to determine his first-choice XI, with Town having chopped and changed selection throughout former manager Phil Brown’s final few weeks in charge.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Wellens said: “Generally when you go into a club, in the previous four or five games, selection has been quite consistent and there is a set formation.

“Looking at the games we have had, there has been a lot of changes in personnel for each game and changes in systems – they have played four at the back and three at the back.

“I am going to find out what my best team is as quickly as possible.

“I want to give the players we have got a chance.

“I haven’t turned up and said to the chairman: ‘I need five players, I want a striker and I want this and that’.

“I said: ‘Let me try to improve the players we have got, let me give them every chance and develop them’.

“If it comes down to it that we need to improve, we will do our best to do that, but I am one for giving players the opportunity for buying into what we want to do.”

Although pleased with the crop of players already at the club, Wellens believes it is slightly weighted in favour of youngsters at present.

Once the transfer window does come around and it is decided new recruits are needed, Wellens says the priority is likely to be bringing in a few more senior figures.

“We have got some good experience but probably a few too many good young players,” said Wellens.

“I would like to have a few more players in that age range of 26, 27 or 28, which is the main bracket of players which you should have.

“At the moment we don’t have that so it’s about the experienced ones looking after the young ones and me looking to help and develop them as well.”
