HUNDREDS turned out at Supermarine Sports and Social Club on Friday night as Walcot ABC hosted their final event of the year, writes DAVE VEYSEY.

Fifteen bouts were contested – 11 of those involving boxers from the host club.

The evening also provided Walcot ABC with the chance to celebrate the life of former local boxing judge and referee Peter Foley, who passed away from cancer a few years ago.

His family and friends donated a shield and cup to be awarded to the top home boxer on the night, and the first recipient of this honour was middleweight Freddie De Giles.

The 32-year-old work rider for Lambourn racehorse trainer Jamie Osbourne was involved in a battle with William Hutton from South Wye Police ABC.

De Giles dominated from the outset against the game Hutton, with stiff left jabs and heavy rights landing regularly to win by a unanimous points decision.

Not far behind him in the Walcot roll of honour was Shakrukh Nanji.

He used his superior skills to defeat Sydenham’s Lewis Stacey by the same margin.

Completing the hat-trick of Walcot wins was McKenzie Lewis-Dean. The 11-year-old, who was making his debut, had a night to remember after he secured a points victory over Oliver English, from Devizes.

Walcot boxers were also involved in some narrow defeats.

Twenty-five-year-old Manjeet Bharj looked to have edged a thriller over Tom Soanes, from Thames Valley ABC, but ringside judges found in favour of Soanes, who won on a split decision.

Jack Irwin, 12, also went down after an entertaining contest with Robert Ruggiero (also Thames Valley).

Hannah O’Brien, 16, battled hard with Shay Jarrett from South Wye Police ABC, but ultimately lost on points.

Debutante Ryan Calabrese, 23, lost by a unanimous points margin against Keto Murrain-Hutton from South Wye Police ABC, schoolgirl Sadie Harris was defeated by Elouise Edwards and Jai Khaira found Aston Duncan, of Thames Valley, too strong.

The show opened with two skills contests.

Ryan Tapp and Adam Lewis-Langford both performed well in these bouts and look to be stars of the future.
