THERE were mixed fortunes for Royal Wootton Bassett at the weekend as the club’s A and B teams tasted success, although C went down bravely after a closely-fought contest against Lawn.

Bassett A continued their strong start to the season with a 53-34 win over Pinehurst C in Division Three of the Swindon District Netball League.

The win ensures Bassett remain second in the table behind division leaders RTM, who are undefeated in their opening nine fixtures.

Bassett made use of the full squad available to coast to a comfortable victory, with Grace Philpot earning the player of the match award.

In Division Four, Bassett B earned a convincing 39-18 win at home to Abbey B.

A combination of great defensive turnovers and positive play when moving forward meant Bassett established an early lead in the first quarter.

Persistent efforts in defence didn’t go unnoticed – despite the favourable scoreline regarding goals scored – as Jess Chandler scooped player of the match.

Little could be done to stop second-placed Moonraker at the weekend too, who retained second place in the division after beating Delta B 35-18.

Meanwhile, the competitive battle to secure top spot in Division Five continues as leaders Bassett C suffered only their second loss of the season when slipping 42-30 at Lawn D.

Despite starting well by taking a one-goal lead at the end of the first quarter, Lawn eased ahead in the second before building a 12-point lead by time the final whistle was blown.

Goal defence Claire Arthur was named player of the match for Bassett, who remain top despite Purton B earning a 48-19 win at Moredon C.

At the top of the District League, there were few surprises in Division One as second-placed Croft A and third placed Pinehurst A both secured wins to keep the pressure on leaders Raychem A.

With all teams having played eight fixtures, Raychem A lead by four points with Abbey A at the foot of the table.

Division Two, meanwhile, is led by Nationwide B ahead of Lawn B.
