MATCH-WINNER Kaiyne Woolery felt Swindon Town played the conditions to perfection as they kept up their fine run of form in League Two with a 2-1 success at home to Newport County on Saturday.

Woolery struck the winning goal with eight minutes to go at the Energy Check County Ground as new Swindon boss Richie Wellens made it three league victories in a row.

A strong wind aided one side in each half at SN1, with Town the beneficiaries in the first and Newport aided by it in the second.

Despite having to defend for large periods after the break, Woolery felt Town always had that spark about them to create chances on the counter – as proved by his winning goal.

“It was a very tough battle – the wind played a big factor in the game,” said striker Woolery.

“Newport had the wind against them in the first half and it pinned them in, so we knew what to expect in the second half.

“I thought we dealt with it quite well and we showed great spirit after they scored because they were on top for a period.

“I thought the boys dug in and we got what we deserved in the end.”

Woolery’s winning goal came after he was played into the box by fellow Town scorer Michael Doughty, although he conceded the opportunity took him by surprise after the pair had spurned a similar chance earlier in the half.

“I didn’t think Doughts was going to play me in because he’d had a chance earlier where he was greedy and didn’t play me in,” joked Woolery.

“I wasn’t really expecting it and it felt like it took ages to go around the goalkeeper and then for it to go in, but luckily it did and we got the three points which is all that matters.”

Woolery drew plenty of praise from Town boss Wellens post-match, but credit was also given to fellow forward Elijah Adebayo too and the 23-year-old was keen to echo his manager’s sentiments.

He said: “Elijah was brilliant – he deserved a goal.

“He hit the post and you knew when the ball went up to him, he was going to make it stick or win a header.

“It makes our job easier because we know he is going to win it, so we can get beyond him and support him.”
