ON-LOAN midfielder Steven Alzate is enjoying his varied roles in the Swindon Town team and says as long as he is in the starting XI, he does not mind where he features.

Alzate has played in all but three of Town’s fixtures this campaign, scoring three times while laying on four assists in his 24 appearances, but the Brighton & Hove Albion loanee has rarely been given a chance in one position as both former manager Phil Brown and current boss Richie Wellens have deployed the versatile attacker in a variety of roles across their respective line-ups.

The 20-year-old last featured in Town’s embarrassing 1-0 FA Cup defeat at home to Woking on December 2, popping up on both wings, and has previously played in the number 10 role that he prefers before missing his first league game of the season in last weekend’s dramatic win over Newport County.

Alzate believes Town fans are already beginning to see the fruits of Wellens’ footballing philosophy as creative players are asked to trade positions in order to keep opposition defences guessing.

He said: “I got told to play on both wings (against Woking), but I don’t really mind where I’m playing, as long as I am playing. I don’t mind if I play in the number 10 role or out on the wing, it doesn’t bother me.

“Our new manager likes to get the ball down and play and I feel like we’ve got quite technical players to be able to do that and we’ve dealt with what he’s asked us to do well.

“Now, we have three league wins in a row, so it’s so far, so good.”

Swindon currently find themselves 11th in the table, but with five points separating Oldham Athletic in 12th and seventh-placed Tranmere Rovers, Alzate knows a positive run of results over Christmas could fire Town into the play-off spots, starting tomorrow against Grimsby Town.

He said: “The league is tight at the moment. All you need is a few wins on the bounce and you’re back up there.

“We’re on the way there now and hopefully we can get into a play-off spot at the end of the season.

“We’ve got three games in one week coming up, so that’s going to be a tough one, but we need to stay focused over the Christmas period because those games are crucial.

“We’re ready for the game (against Grimsby). Hopefully we can make it four wins in a row.

“We’re going to play on our strengths and we’re not too focused on them. We’re looking forward to it.”
