SWINDON Town manager Richie Wellens felt the fact his side were able to create plenty of chances against Grimsby Town on Saturday helped soften the blow of seeing their winning League Two run come to an end.

Wellens took his side to Blundell Park hunting a fourth league victory in succession, but they were forced to leave empty-handed following a narrow 2-1 loss.

Although disappointed by the fact numerous opportunities to claim at least a point were spurned by his side, Wellens took comfort from the fact his Swindon players were still able to show plenty of attacking threat in difficult weather conditions in the north east.

“If I’m being really critical, I don’t think we took advantage of the wind in the first half,” said Wellens.

“We had a lot of opportunities where the final pass was right, and we were getting good chances on goal – we should’ve come into half time ahead.

“I thought we were outstanding in the second half. We made chance after chance, and the lads have been great over the last three or four weeks so I’m not going to be too critical.

“I’d be really worried if we came here and got beat 2-1 having created no chances.

“It’s fair to say that anyone watching that game will understand it’s tough to take that we haven’t got at least a point out of the game and three or four goals.”

As well as some missed chances in front of goal, Wellens felt Swindon were not at their best at the other end of the pitch as both of Grimsby’s goals could have been avoided.

However, with the Mariners boasting a decent home record and the prospect of flowing football not aided by wet and windy weather, Wellens took positives from the performance for Swindon to build on.

“The final ball, that final bit of quality – sometimes we overhit the final pass,” said Wellens.

“The mistake for the penalty was a bad error, but I thought Sid (Nelson) recovered well from that.

“The chance that they scored, Lawrence (Vigouroux) should have palmed the ball wide and not allowed them another opportunity to score.

“Apart from that, Grimsby didn’t have too many opportunities.

“It’s quite a difficult place to come – the conditions and surroundings are tough. And Grimsby are not a bad team at home.

“They have picked up some good results, and you can see that a little bit now.

“But we should be taking at least a point home.”

Swindon return to action next Saturday when they host local rivals Cheltenham Town in their final pre-Christmas fixture.
