RICHIE Wellens admits signing Sid Nelson on a permanent deal from Championship club Millwall is becoming increasingly unlikely.

Nelson, 23, last played for Town on New Year’s Day against Exeter – a game in which he was forced off the pitch in the first half after picking up a knock to his knee.

His six-month loan spell at the County Ground ended hours after the full-time whistle of that game, prompting Nelson’s immediate return to his parent club where he has remained since.

The no-nonsense defender has appeared for Millwall’s Under 23s this week while club bosses continue to negotiate with Wellens regarding a possible permanent move.

But those talks are continuing to prove unsuccessful, and Wellens today revealed that he will not consider extending Nelson’s loan – of which he has one remaining - due to the volume of centre backs he already has at the club.

Wellens said: “It’s proving tough to deal with because we’ve only got one (loan) spot available.

“If I can do Sid (Nelson) on a permanent I will, but that doesn’t look likely at the moment. Sid is a player of good age and has played a lot of games.

“He’s a player that we could build a team around. But we’ve got Olly Lancashire coming back from injury in addition to Dion Conroy, Tom Broadbent and Luke Woolfenden.

“Do I want to use my last loan up on a centre back? Probably not unless we can do something.

“All across the pitch I’m happy now. I was looking for a striker, but Marc Richards has come in and done brilliantly.”

The Town boss also confirmed that he is likely to make one more addition to his squad, adding that at least one player is likely to move out as a result.

He said: “We’re looking to get one or two more out, but we’re looking for clubs to come into our players.

“In terms of ins, we’re pretty much done. Unless we can get two or three out in the next week or so, we’re done.”

Meanwhile Joe Romanski will spend the rest of the season on loan at National League South club Bath City, who are currently third in the division and chasing promotion.

Wellens hopes watching Romanski play in first-team games at Twerton Park will help him record a greater understanding of what position best suits the Town teenager.

“Joe Romanski has gone to Bath City, which is good for him,” confirmed Wellens.

“He can still train with us every day, which is important for him because it means he doesn’t have to move.

“It’s a youth loan, so we can recall him at any stage. Joe is a really talented player and physicaly very good.

“But I need to watch him to find out what his best position is – and I’m not prepared to put him in the first team at the moment to find that out.

“We’ll watch all of his games for Bath, hopefully that will give me a good indication at the end of his loan spell with regards to what his best position is.”
