SWINDON Town supporters have welcomed news announced this afternoon that the football club has confirmed an agreement with Swindon Borough Council to jointly purchase the County Ground freehold with Swindon Town Supporters’ Trust.

The club issued a statement at 4.45pm after a press conference was held at the County Ground earlier this afternoon.

Cllr David Renard, leader of Swindon Borough Council, told the Advertiser the freehold will be purchased for £2.2million – subject to cabinet approval.

Supporters quickly voiced their delight at the news, praising club chairman Lee Power, Swindon Borough Council and Trust chairman Steve Mytton for the work done to date.

One fan said: “It’s been a long time coming. But at last I think we’re heading in the right direction.”

Another added: “Fantastic news.... and building on the improving 'feel good factor'. Well done Mr Power (that's a first from me), the Trust and SBC (that's a first too).”

And: “Excellent news. Well done Lee Power.”

Fans also reacted positively on social media as the County Ground’s feel-good factor was added to following Saturday’s 3-0 win at home against Colchester United, Town’s biggest home win of the season in all competitions.

One fan wrote: “Great news! Let’s hope it’s the start of a positive period for the club I love #COYRs.”

Another added: “Fantastic news. Congrats to all concerned.”

The agreement is subject to cabinet approval at a meeting on Wednesday, March 20.
