FC DORCAN struck twice in extra time to win the Swindon Advertiser Cup in the Swindon & District League on Saturday.

Finn Wilkinson and Edd Herbert were both on target in the first period of the additional half-hour of the final as Dorcan earned a 3-1 victory over Bassett Bulldogs at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground in Royal Wootton Bassett.

Joel Ofori had earlier given Dorcan the lead in the first half of the original 90 minutes, but Colin Cochrane levelled for Bassett before the break.

No winning goal was forthcoming in the second half and extra time was needed to decide the winner, where Jimmy Horwood’s Dorcan raised their game to take the spoils.

Manager Horwood said: “I think we deserved to win it overall.

“We were very poor in the first half, so a draw at half-time was probably fair, but we were camped in Bulldogs’ half for most of the second half.

“When it got to extra time, we were moving them around a lot and we were always confident that we would get at least one more goal.

“We got two goals in the first half of extra time and saw it out quite comfortably after that.

“It’s great for us to win it. You play football with your mates, that’s the whole point of the league, but you also play to win things – no one goes out to lose.”

Dorcan, who finished fifth in the Premier Division table this season, had to go the extra mile in their cup run before eventually seeing off Division Two side Bulldogs in the showpiece match.

The final was the third match of five for Dorcan that went to extra time, with their semi-final success over Blunsdon last month only secured via a penaly shoot-out.

Horwood said: “We had a really tough run in the cup, so it’s great to end it with the trophy.

“I think we played five games in total and three of them went to extra time – we were 3-0 down in one of them too.

“We had to show fight in the run as we have had a little bit of a disappointing season in the league.

“We want to try to push to win the league next season. We were a lot closer last season than we were this season.

“Winning the cup means we can still say we have had a good season.”

There was also glory for Wheatsheaf Stratton on the Swindon & District League’s Finals Day on Saturday as they thrashed Lower Stratton 5-0 to win the George Thomas/Don Rogers Cup.
