Swindon Supermarine manager Lee Spalding felt his side were more than a match for Swindon Town despite Richie Wellens men triumphing 3-0 in the clubs’ annual pre-season friendly.

It was the 26th consecutive year that Marine had faced their league counterparts, but the 2019 edition was the closest for several seasons, according to Spalding.

Will Randall’s powerful first-half strike could have been prevented while Town’s second from the penalty spot may not have been given on another day in the Marine manager’s eyes.

Nevertheless, Spalding heralded his side’s ability to produce a respectable performance in what was Marine’s debut match in pre-season.

He said: “For the majority of the first half, I didn’t think there was an awful lot in it.

“They had most of the ball, and that’s what we expected, so we knew we would have to have a decent shape to try and stop them from playing through us.

“In the second half, it was more of the same. We had some good chances, but overall, I don’t think we were far away from giving them a good game to be honest.”

Taking to the field without star man Conor McDonagh – who is still recovering from a broken foot that he suffered near the end of last season – Marine did give their visitors an early scare at the Webbswood Stadium as Stuart Fleetwood robbed Town trialist Frankie Sutherland of the ball before a poor touch robbed him of a chance to shoot.

In the second half, Fleetwood saw a shot blocked inside the penalty area before substitute Brad Gray tried an acrobatic effort that bounced just wide.

Regardless of the fact his side failed to find the net, Spalding felt there was plenty to take from their first outing of the season.

He said: “It was our first pre-season game and I think there are more positives to take from it than negatives.

“I thought the lads gave a good account of themselves and I didn’t think we were far off it.

“At times, we played some good stuff. In the first half, we could have kept hold of the ball slightly better, but we gave away a sloppy goal and then, for five minutes, we lost our shape a little bit and that made the rest of the first half quite difficult.

“Overall, it was a good performance from us, it’s got minutes in the legs for us, everyone has had an opportunity to play and it’s on to the next one.”
