LOAN recruit Adam May expects the intensity of Swindon Town’s pre-season schedule to ramp up as the countdown continues towards the new League Two campaign.

Richie Wellens’ first-team squad started the third week of their summer programme on Monday by flying out to Spain for a training camp.

The Town players will spend a week in La Manga, having safely negotiated their first two pre-season friendlies away against local non-league sides Brimscombe & Thrupp and Swindon Supermarine last Tuesday and Friday respectively.

May, who has agreed a season-long switch to Swindon from League One side Portsmouth, has been pleased with how preparations for the 2019-20 campaign have unfolded so far.

Now the midfielder expects efforts to ramp up a notch both on the field as well as off it as the Town squad look to knit together both a winning game plan and team spirit.

“It’s been a positive first few weeks,” said May.

“All the lads have come back in fit and sharp – and I think the lads have shown that in their 45 minutes in the game.

“Pre-season has been a lot of hard work and a lot of running – it’s a typical pre-season, really.

“The first game last Tuesday was a case of going out and enjoying ourselves. I think we all did that, but as the games go on, things will become more serious.

“We’ve got a lot of time together waiting for us. The trip to La Manga is the time to get to know each other more.

“There are plenty of new signings and I feel we have all gelled quickly.”

Town are due to play a match against Everton’s U23 side during their camp in Spain before restarting the friendlies back in England with games away at both Hungerford Town and Salisbury next Tuesday.
