PROMOTION might not have been achieved this season, but Swindon skipper Marc Williamson has reason to be encouraged for a positive 2020 WEPL Wiltshire campaign.

Swindon play their penultimate fixture of the season tomorrow when relegation threatened Hinton Charterhouse visit the County Ground.

While Marshfield wrapped up the league title last weekend, Swindon can still finish as 2019 runners up.

But they are likely to require two wins from their final two fixtures due to the fact that they play second-placed Westbury on the final day of the season.

Finishing second isn’t absolutely necessary for Williamson, but he admits it would serve the club a big confidence boost ahead of next season’s promotion push to Prem Two Glos/Wilts.

He said: “The last week should hopefully be a second placed shootout, we’re really gunning for that one and hoping to finish as high as possible.

“We were looking to get promoted this season, so in a sense it is disappointing. We’ve improved as the season has gone on, so I’m not too dissatisfied by the season as a whole.

“Marshfield finished second for three seasons in a row, and they got what they deserved this season.

“They were the best team in the league. But, we’re building our team well and next season can be promising.”

Outside of Swindon and Marshfield, all teams have lost at least five matches this season – highlighting the competitive nature of the county’s top tier.

Realistically, four teams can still face the drop with just two rounds of fixtures remaining.

Williamson admits the division’s tough nature means no one can afford to bank on a promotion or top half campaign.

He added: “All teams apart from Marshfield have lost three or four.

“It’s tough at the top, and the league is a division of two halves. It’s amazing how we’re only two weeks away from the end of the season.

“We can now enjoy the games remaining and try for one final push.”

Elsewhere in WEPL Wiltshire this weekend, mid-table Royal Wootton Bassett can secure their WEPL Wiltshire status by beating Potterne 2s at home.

Purton are also in action, they travel to Devizes with survival hopes hanging by a thread.
