EDJIDJA Mbunga got the only goal of the game as Highworth Town picked up a first home win of the season in Southern League Division One South last night with a 1-0 success over Sholing.

The Worthians had won two of their previous four league fixtures this term, although both of those came on the road.

Tuesday’s result also made it back-to-back wins for Jeff Roberts’ side for the first time in the league this season after they won by the same scoreline away at Willand Rovers on Saturday.

There was little to choose between the sides in an even first half at the Save on Tyres Stadium, but Highworth eventually got their noses in front four minutes before the interval as Mbunga coolly despatched a one-on-one finish.

The Worthians pressed for a second goal after the restart, with Steve Robertson twice going close.

First, the striker saw a header come back off the crossbar on the hour mark and, five minutes later, he could not convert on the follow-up after the Sholing keeper saved Sam Morris’ initial effort.

The home side continued to hold sway as the contest neared its conclusion and Mbunga went close to doubling his tally when he forced a low save.

That was to prove the last chance of note as Roberts’ side comfortably ground out the closing minutes to secure their maiden home success in the league this season.
