FIREBRANDS A caused one of the biggest shocks of the Verde Recreo Championship season on Saturday when downing second placed Swindon 5-2 to put an end to the club’s slim title hopes.

Swindon trailed runaway leaders Swansea by 10 points ahead of Saturday’s visit to the division’s bottom side, and were confident that gap could be at worst kept the same by time the full time whistle was sounded.

But the Wiltshire club was caught napping as a bare 11 crashed to a three-goal win to gift Firebrands only their second win of the season.

The game started poorly for the visitors as Firebrands scored from two short corners – one of which deflected through Jonathan Griffiths’ legs.

Firebrands’ two-goal lead was quickly added to when another short corner was converted, though Swindon later pegged a goal back through skipper Thomas Gillingham.

The second half saw plenty of cards handed out, Aidan Bramwell was shown yellow for a stick tackle which later turned into a red.

Firebrands added goals four and five before Swindon scored a late consolation courtesy of James Lewis.

Swindon return to action on Saturday when Isca A visit Wiltshire.

Games for the second and third teams were postponed.
