SWINDON Town coach Tommy Wright revealed Matt Palmer could still have a future at the club despite manager Richie Wellens telling the midfielder he could leave.

Interest had been shown by both Wigan Athletic and Oldham Athletic earlier in the season, but with neither entering into advanced talks with the 25-year-old, Palmer may well remain in Wiltshire.

Prior to the former Bradford City man playing the full game during Tuesday night’s defeat to Exeter City in the EFL Trophy, the Derby-born midfielder had played just 60 minutes since joining the club in January.

Those numbers could well increase in the coming months, according to Wright, if Palmer is not snapped up by another club before next Friday’s domestic deadline.

Wright said: “He (Palmer) was very good on Tuesday night – that was the Matty Palmer we brought to the club, and that was what we expected of him.

“He did well at Rotherham, Burton – where he won promotion from this league with both of those teams.

“He’s a good player, but it’s just not working for him at the moment. But as you could see on Tuesday, he’s got ability, he scored a great goal.

“As long as he’s at the club, he’ll always be in the picture. If nobody comes in for him, he’s here, he’ll be added to the squad and he’ll be fighting for a place, it’s as simple as that.”
