AUSTRALIAN businessman Clem Morfuni says he sees “no reason” why Swindon Town Football Club and Swindon Town Supporters Trust should not be able to continue with their joint-venture purchase of the County Ground once the football club’s ownership issues are straightened out.

The deal to purchase the ground’s freehold from Swindon Borough Council has been put on hold since two cases involving Town chairman, Lee Power were brought to light in May of this year.

The construction mogul is currently entangled with the Town chairman over a 15 per cent share of the football club, but believes he will win his case when the issue is eventually heard in court.

Meanwhile, the other case involves football agent Michael Standing and an alleged 50 per cent stake in Swindon Town Football Club.

Morfuni echoed the thoughts of TrustSTFC vice-chairman Rob Angus, and stated the deal to purchase the County Ground will happen eventually, but fans must show patience while the legal proceedings are sorted out.

Morfuni said: “If I get the 15 per cent shares, there’ no reason why we shouldn’t be able to buy the ground in a 50-50 deal with the supporters Trust – there’s no reason why at all.

“The fans have just got to be a bit more patient because it will happen. We just need to sort out the legal issues first.

“I spoke to Rob Angus recently and he said to me that he believes my case is pretty strong and clear cut, but we’ve just got to wait and see what happens.”

Morfuni said he has been in regular conversation with the Trust board since the deal was first established in a bid to maintain the total transparency the Australian has long called for from the club.

Morfuni criticised the club for not always being clear with fans on contentious issues and believes that must change when the deal to buy the County Ground gets up and running again.

He said: “I’ve been talking to Rob Angus at the Trust quite regularly anyway, I’ve probably spoken to him at least three times a week just to give him updates.

“We want to have some transparency between the club and the fans – I’ve always said that – and I’ve told the same thing to any of the fans who have called me.

“We just want to make sure that everyone is on the same page and we want to make Swindon Town a more transparent club. At the moment, it’s not really happening.”
