SWINDON Town have signed former Premier League right-back Kieron Freeman on a short-term contract.

After over six months without a club, free-agent Freeman will join Town for the rest of the season following his release from Sheffield United at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

Freeman marks Town's third fresh signing this window, following the acquisitions of AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper, Mark Travers and Brentford left-back, Dominic Thompson.

The 28-year-old is likely to go straight into the Town squad for Saturday's trip to Ipswich Town as Rob Hunt begins a three-game suspension for a red card picked up in the 4-1 defeat to MK Dons on December 29.

Speaking to Swindon Town Football Club’s official website, Freeman said: "I'm buzzing to be here and to get it over the line, and I can't wait to get started.

"I feel that this is a great opportunity for me, I've played here a few times and enjoyed playing here.

"The management team have been brilliant and really welcoming. They've told me what they want and what they want to do and I'm really excited."

Freeman arrives at the County Ground having made 235 professional appearances, including two Premier League outings for Sheffield United last season.

The season prior to that, in which the Blades were promoted to the top-flight of English football, the Welshman featured 23 times.

The Bestwood-born defender started his professional career with Nottingham Forest before being loaned out to Notts County and Mansfield Town.

Freeman then signed for Derby County in 2012, playing 25 times over a period of three years for the Rams.

While at the Pride Park outfit, Freeman had a spell at Sheffield United where he went on to sign permanently in 2015. He amassed over 100 appearances for the Blades, scoring 14 goals before being named in the PFA team of the year in 2016-17.

The 28-year-old has played against Swindon more times than any other club in his career – seven – while the right-back was also a part of the Sheffield United team that lost 7-6 on aggregate to Town in the 2014-15 campaign.

Freeman scored the Blades’ only goal in the home leg at Bramall Lane before playing 90 minutes in one of the most incredible football matches ever seen at the County Ground four days later.

The right-sided defender has also represented Wales at youth level and also appeared for the senior side under Ryan Giggs in November 2018.
