BRISTOL Rovers director of football Tommy Widdrington revealed there is a possibility the Gas could entertain Swindon Town in their rearranged League One fixture just a day after the original game was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Rovers’ caretaker boss was left frustrated after receiving a call just before midday to say the game was off, and said his club’s ground staff were “physically upset” after their hard work to prepare the pitch went unrewarded.

Widdrington said the postponement was announced far too early and the Memorial Stadium pitch is perfectly playable in his opinion.

Reacting to the postponement, Widdrington said: “You say a late postponement – for me, it’s a little bit early.

“I got a call just before 12 saying the game was off. When I got here, I see the ground staff physically upset because they’ve worked so hard since Tuesday night. We’ve had low temperatures – I know that – but the pitch is playable in my opinion.

“We’re going to train on it today (Saturday), and we’re waiting on clarification as to when the fixture will be rearranged for.

“I’m gutted for the ground staff because they’re physically upset. One of the guys is leaning on his fork and the fork is in the ground.

“One or two areas off the pitch where the linesman might run are a bit firmer, but then run in a different area or put trainers on.”

The stand-in boss was set to take charge of his first game since the sacking of Paul Tisdale on Wednesday, but may not have to wait long to make his Rovers managerial debut if the game against Town is moved to Valentine’s Day.

If the game does not go ahead on Sunday, Rovers’ next free slot is Tuesday March 23 – and after that it’s Tuesday April 13.

Widdrington said: “In this climate, nobody can afford to move for fixtures – we haven’t got that many Tuesday nights left really.

“We’re looking at all options, and logistically we will have to try and fit it in whenever we can, but the sooner the better for us.

“We’re still waiting on clarification as to when the fixture is rearranged for, and there is a possibility it could be as early as tomorrow.

“Other teams have done it, we’re really keen to get a game on. We hope we see the same appetite from the other side. At the end of the day, it takes two to tango. Let’s hope both clubs do what they can – we’ve done enough, certainly today.”
