SWINDON Town midfielder Jack Payne insisted he did not feel he had a point to prove against former club Lincoln City on Tuesday night after an impressive display at the LNER Stadium.

Town twice took the lead in Lincolnshire but were twice pegged back as John Sheridan’s men were forced to settle for a point against the league leaders.

Although the 26-year-old was not directly involved in either goal, he regained several admirers among those watching after dove-tailing wonderfully with teammate Scott Twine in forward areas.

The former Imps midfielder denied a suggestion his inspired outing was down to wanting to prove a point to anyone at his former stomping ground – instead, Payne simply stated he wants to help Town stay up in any way he can.

Payne said: “I didn’t really feel I had a point to prove to anyone at Lincoln, all I care about is doing everything for Swindon to help us stay up.

“Every game is a massive game at the moment, and I’m just focused on doing what I can for the team by working hard.

“I know some games I might not be at my best, but I will give everything I have in every game.

“Hopefully, I can help the team as much as possible between now and the end of the season.”

Tuesday night’s draw against Lincoln saw Town record double figures, in terms of shots at goal, for the second game in a row following a pretty poor run in the final third.

Payne is aware his teammates have not been scoring enough goals of late and is keen to add to his two strikes this season as Town attempt to secure their League One status for next term.

The 26-year-old has previously mentioned he is “gutted” with how Swindon’s campaign has developed up until now, but is desperate to look to the future and make it a successful end to the 2020-21 season.

The midfielder said: “It would have been nice to get a goal (against Lincoln), but I’m pleased with the performance of the team – and we got two goals as a team, so that was good.

“I feel like the goals we conceded, we maybe could have done better with, but we were unlucky not to come away with a win.

“We’re in the position we are now, and we can’t look at the past and how things have gone so far this season.

“All we can affect is going forward for the rest of the season. It’s important we finish the season strongly and try to be as successful as we can.”
