FORMER Swindon Town boss Phil Brown has taken over as manager of Southend United following the sacking of Mark Molesley.

The former Weymouth boss led Southend to 23rd in League Two - five points off safety - with just six games remaining in the season, and the board at Roots Hall felt now was the final chance for a change.

Molesley has been replaced by 61-year-old Brown who managed the Shrimpers from 2013 until 2018. He was then appointed at the County Ground two months after being placed on gardening leave by the Essex club.

Brown's association with Swindon ended later that year after a poor start to the 2018-19 season. He was then replaced by Richie Wellens.

The South Shields-born manager went on to enjoy spells managing Indian Super League sides, Pune City and Hyderabad before making his return to Essex to try and save the Shrimpers from a relegation to the National League.
