FORMER Swindon Robins rider Adam Ellis enjoyed a sensational weekend after edging through to the final round of World Championship qualifying as well as signing for Scunthorpe Scorpions.

Ellis finished third in the Italian qualifying event behind Patryk Dudek and Mikkel Michelsen to book his spot at the GP Challenge in Zarnovica, Slovakia on August 21 – where the top three riders earn places in the 2022 SGP season.

Fellow Brits Dan Bewley and Robert Lambert have also qualified for the GP Challenge after both won third-place run offs for their respective event’s final place.

Bewley made it through the Glasgow qualifier, but only at the expense of Robins favourite Rasmus Jensen, after holding his nerve to win a run-off against the Dane with both riders scoring 11 points.

Another ex-Robin, Tobiasz Musielak comfortably qualified for the Slovakian event with a 15-point maximum, while Chris Holder and Nicolai Klindt were the other three riders to progress from Ashfield.

Lambert was successful in Croatia, finishing third in a meeting where only three places were available – winning a three-man run-off to clinch his place.

Meanwhile, Ellis confirmed his move to Championship side Scunthorpe to cap off a highly successful weekend for the Brit.

After the Scorpions made the big decision to release club legend Josh Auty – whose Testimonial they will honour in 2022 – the Lincolnshire club announced they had signed Ellis after a two-season spell away from second-tier racing.

Scorpions team manager Dave Peet said: “We felt we had to go for it with Adam - it was too good an opportunity to miss - especially as we genuinely feel we have a chance this season with him.”
