SWINDON Town’s first home game in the Clem Morfuni era will be a friendly against Peterborough United after the club made some last-minute alterations to its remaining pre-season schedule.

Posh will travel to Wiltshire on Saturday, July 31 for a 3pm kick-off while the midweek friendly against Barnet – set for Tuesday, July 27 has been cancelled. Saturday’s pre-season friendly against the National League side Weymouth goes ahead as scheduled.

Head coach Ben Garner says the decision to cancel the Barnet friendly was made in order to give him and coaching staff as much time as possible to get their ideas across to the squad, ahead of the League Two season getting underway in two weeks’ time.

According to Google, Town were due to play Sutton United away next Saturday, though owner Morfuni said this is not true and he will make sure the game against Peterborough goes ahead with fans.

Meanwhile, Garner said the extra time in between games will allow him to cast an eye over the significant number of trialists on the books.

He said: “There are a lot of trialists in – we’ve added one or two others as well, and that will be something we’ll constantly assess.

“We’ve actually cancelled the fixture against Barnet on Tuesday because we need a full training week on the grass going into the Peterborough game next Saturday.

“We’ll assess a number of the trialists in the game on Saturday, and the main focus is on getting our players up to speed and getting them the minutes they need. At the same time, we need to look at the trialists and see if there is anyone who can help us moving forward.”

With the takeover being completed so late into the summer, many fans had feared the best players would no longer be available for Town to sign.

However, Garner says that a list drawn up by both he and Ben Chorley still contains the vast majority of names they were initially after.

Garner said: “The time frame is obviously a challenge, but when I first met Ben Chorley, we had a list of around 35 to 40 players between us. Only three or four of those have actually gone anywhere so far.

“And in terms of some of the loan options, there’s a delay on that because Premier League and Championship clubs had players in the Euros or coming back late.

“There’s still a number of good players out there, and we’re working very hard to bring in the right players for us.”
