PURTON Cricket Club is set to mark the club’s bicentenary of existence with a friendly match against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) later this month.

The MCC - who reside and play matches at Lord’s Cricket Ground in South West London - will arrive in Purton on Sunday, August 29 for the match which was postponed from last year due to coronavirus.

As one of the oldest clubs in the country and the oldest in Wiltshire, Purton will mark 200 years in existence with a day of fun at the club with the centrepiece being the flagship fixture.

Callum Wright, Purton CC chairman, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the club and celebrate a major milestone in our history.

“We can’t wait to welcome our members, sponsors and the local community to the event which we believe will be a fantastic family day out.”

According to the club, the day will feature games and competitions for children to participate in, both on and off the field, as well as stalls, a BBQ, and a bar for the adults.

Post-match, there will be a hog roast in the evening accompanied by some live music to round off the day.

Joe Gardiner, who operates as the club archivist - having occupied most roles in his 59 years of service to the club - said: “If James Sadler - who gifted the ground to the club in 1911 - was alive today he would be delighted to see so many players coming through the ranks and enjoying the sport and discipline that cricket offers. He would certainly have been proud that his “gift for all time” was being celebrated to this day.”

Meanwhile, former Purton player Craig Miles - who plays for Warwickshire in the County Championship - said: “I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have spent my formative cricket-playing years at Purton.

“The biggest thanks should go to everyone who has been involved with the club from its beginnings, throughout its history and to the present day.”

Purton say there will be a limited number of tickets available so if you wish to reserve your spot, please get in contact early and indicate how many people you would like to buy for by emailing chair.purtoncc@gmail.com.
