SWINDON Town are waiting on international clearance for Jonny Williams to be able to make his debut, with head coach Ben Garner hopeful that will come through before Tuesday night’s League Two clash at home to Tranmere Rovers.

The Welshman – who had been a free agent following his release from Championship side, Cardiff City over the summer – signed for Swindon on Friday but failed to receive the necessary permission in time to run out against Carlisle United on Saturday.

According to the English Football League (EFL), international clearance is necessary despite all Welsh-based EFL or Premier League clubs being regarded as domestic for the purposes of its provisions. Clearance must come from either The FA or FA of Wales, depending on where the club was located in which the player has recently left.

Asked about the likelihood of Williams’ availability for Town’s League Two contest with Tranmere in Monday’s pre-match press conference, Garner suggested the 27-year-old should be in the squad on Tuesday night.

Garner said: “He’s in the mix [for selection], we’re just waiting for international clearance.

“Jonny trained on Sunday and looked very good, we’re just waiting to see if that international clearance comes through in time, which we hope it will do.”

Town will be hoping to respond to the club’s 2-1 defeat to Carlisle United on Saturday.
