Swindon Town Football Club have responded to reports home fans were shouting homophobic abuse towards players during their team’s 1-0 victory over Mansfield on Saturday.
A fan in attendance posted on Twitter that another man sat near him in the Don Rogers Stand was shouting homophobic abuse at players from both teams. When challenged it is alleged the man said he “had every right to say it”.
Others in the area report abuse being shouted even though their children were in the same area enjoying the game.
The concerned Swindon fan who challenged him has reported the area to the club.
Pride of Wiltshire, a Swindon Town LGBTQIA+ fans and allies alliance, tweeted: "Sad to hear about these troubling events at yesterday’s game. Any kind of discriminatory abuse is completely unacceptable.”
Swindon Town CEO Rob Angus responded to the alleged behaviour with a zero tolerance stance.
“Any form of discriminatory abuse is completely unacceptable and won’t be tolerated at Swindon Town all are welcome at STFC,” said Angus.
The club also posted a no-tolerance message on Twitter.
Any kind of discriminatory abuse and behaviour is unacceptable, and won’t be tolerated by the Football Club.
