SWINDON Town have signed Brentford forward Alex Gilbert on a season-long loan deal.

The club had made no secret of the fact it was out to bolster its attacking options, and Ben Garner's men completed a deal for Gilbert with a little over three hours of the transfer window remaining.

The Brentford winger came through West Bromwich Albion's academy before signing for the Bees in 2019.

He went on to make two FA Cup appearances for the senior side, as well as featuring for Brentford B where he scored and assisted with regularity.

Gilbert has also impressed on the international stage having represented Republic of Ireland at both U19 and U21 level, playing 69 minutes for the U21 in a 2-1 victory over Wales.

The 19-year-old's arrival signs off a hugely productive and successful summer transfer window for Swindon in which the County Ground club has signed 13 new players while re-signing two previously released men.

Town’s director of football, Ben Chorley, said: “I first made contact with Brentford four weeks ago regarding taking Alex on loan. I watched him a number of times in preseason play for the first team.

“He plays with a hungriness, a desire to get shots off and always looks to create goal-scoring opportunities.

“He is very dynamic, is excellent in the air and is a scorer of all types of goals.

“The style and pace of play that he is coached at Brentford, really fits in with the process of what we’re trying to create here.

“We wish him all the best for his time with us.”

Gilbert will wear number 19 while on loan at Swindon.
