SWINDON Supermarine crashed out of the FA Cup at the first qualifying round after a 5-0 humbling by Poole Town on Saturday.

Marine were handed a tough tie - taking on their Southern League Premier South rivals - but began well at the Tatnum Ground before the goals began to rain down on Martin Horsell’s goal.

Following an unsuccessful handball appeal in Poole’s penalty area from a Conor McDonagh cross, Marine twice went close to scoring anyway early on. Henry Spalding blasted over when well set, and McDonagh saw a header cleared off the line around the half-hour mark.

Four minutes later, Lee Spalding’s men went behind after Dan Bartlett smashed an effort into the net off the bar via a healthy deflection from the edge of the box.

Marine rallied but couldn’t find an equaliser, and five minutes into the second half the hosts doubled their lead from the penalty spot.

Poole striker Tony Lee was fouled by Mat Liddiard, and the former picked himself up to slot home the penalty.

McDonagh had a golden chance to pull one back after round the goalkeeper, but brilliant defending from Poole smothered the danger at the last minute.

As Spalding rang the changes in search of an unlikely comeback, Poole continued to be efficient in front of goal. The home side hit the post and forced Horsell into a smart double save before eventually adding a third goal - Luke Burbridge tapping home on the break.

With Marine playing the final moments with 10 men following an injury to George Dowling, Poole added some gloss to the scoreline. Lee headed home a late fourth while Burbridge rounded the game off in added time.

Meanwhile, Highworth Town drew 1-1 with Shaftesbury at the Save on Tyres Stadium at the weekend and face a replay in Dorset on Tuesday night.

Shaftesbury went ahead in the 14th minute when Louis Kellaway found the bottom corner from the edge of the box, beating goalkeeper Connor Thompson to his left-hand side.

The lead could have been doubled but for a goal-line clearance from skipper Dan Comer before Highworth worked their way into the game in the second half. Ash Edenborough headed home a Sean Wood corner in the 56th minute to force a replay.
