ROYAL Wootton Bassett won their first ever match at South West Premier league level with a 25-24 success over Camborne last weekend.
Bassett started well with early pressure but the first Camborne attack in the third minute was initially well defended before a loose pass was intercepted on the 22 and Camborne ran in under the post for a converted try.
Alan Low’s side immediately went on the offensive, and scrum-half Owain Hire broke through the Cornish defence before feeding young winger Scott Douglas who powered over.
Camborne then had a penalty following an offside infringement which was successful and restored their lead.
But Bassett fought on and ended up creating a healthy 15-10 lead before the break courtesy of another Douglas try and a Tom Fieldsend penalty.
Just before the interval, it got even better for Bassett after a speculative punt upfield saw the ball bobble in the in-goal area and captain Gavin Ougan pounced on a moment of indecision to touch down.
But the Cornish side came out all guns blazing after the break and eventually broke through for a try before the hour mark.
Camborne bridged the gap further courtesy of a try under the posts in the 60th minute. With the score converted, Bassett were 24-22 down and wondering what had gone wrong.
However, in the 70th minute a further Camborne offside offence gave Fieldsend the opportunity to slot what was to be the match-winning score, and he took it to mark a historic day for the Wiltshire club.
Elsewhere, in South West One East, Marlborough powered to a 50-25 home win over Grove to extend their 100 per cent start to the campaign.
However, the Common outfit remains on minus one point following their pre-season points deduction.
Meanwhile, Chippenham fell to defeat once again as they lost 24-13 away at Sherborne.
Trowbridge secured a positive result though, beating Buckingham 19-17 at home.
