SWINDON Town assistant manager Scott Lindsey is excited to see the club’s development players take their chance in Tuesday night’s EFL Trophy group-stage match at home to Newport County.

Town have already booked their spot in the next round thanks to two wins from two so far and can be assured of a home tie in the knockout stage with another success – either in normal time or penalties – while a penalty shoot-out defeat would still be enough to top the group.

Newport arrive at the County Ground knowing they must win to qualify while also balancing an impending League Two game at Hartlepool United on Friday night.

Both teams are expected to make as many changes as permissible on Tuesday evening, and Lindsey admitted he is looking forward to seeing those players who deserve their chance to feature.

In Friday’s pre-match press conference, Lindsey said: “It’s really exciting working with this group in detail because we work with the players who play every week in the first team more often than not.

“But when we come to these sorts of games where you’re playing the younger professionals, it’s really exciting to see them play.

“You see them every day on the training ground and the effort they put in – their attitudes and commitment to the job is second to none.

“We do a lot of individual work with them in training, so to see them actually play is really exciting.

“It’s great for the coaching staff to watch them get their chance as well because I know how much time and effort everybody puts into these players.”

As well as attempting to secure a home tie in the knockout round, Lindsey says a victory is important as the club wants to implement a winning mentality into the squad.

The Town assistant stressed that winning at home is not on the club’s mind though as performances have been more than encouraging.

Lindsey said: “We’re not bothered who we get in the next round – I’m sure it will be competitive whoever we’re drawn against, so we’re not too bothered about that.

“We’ve been good at home, I think we’ve played well. OK, the results haven’t matched as such, but I still think we’ve played well.

“We want to create a winning environment throughout the group so that in every game we play we have that winning mentality.”
