Swindon Town’s League Two game away at Exeter City on Boxing Day has been postponed due to Covid.

Exeter City informed the EFL that it would be unable to fulfil the fixture at St James’ Park due to a number of positive cases in the Grecians' squad.

A statement on Swindon's website said: "Swindon Town Football Club can confirm that our Boxing Day trip to Exeter City in the EFL Sky Bet League Two has been postponed.

"Ben Garner's team were due to make the trip to Devon on Sunday 26th December - 3pm Kick-Off - but this fixture has now been postponed.

"Due to a COVID-19 Outbreak in the Exeter camp, the Grecians have informed the EFL that they would be unable to fulfil the fixture on Boxing Day.

"A rearranged date for this fixture will be announced in due course.

"Ticketing information regarding this fixture will be made public in due course."

With cases also affecting the Town squad, the match was already in doubt.

Last weekend’s game against Walsall was called off after it was discovered that 15 people at Town had coronavirus.

That came after Town CEO Rob Angus revealed at a recent Official Supporters Club Q&A that a number of Town players had Covid and they would need to see if they could field a team for the Christmas away game.

He said: "We’ll have to review that early next week and see how the players are, see how they’ve worked through their symptoms, it’ll probably be a daily thing that we check but we’ll keep people up to date as and when we know whether that game will be on or not."

But now that decision has been taken away from Town.

It’s the latest in a host of Boxing Day fixtures which have been postponed as coronavirus outbreaks continue to cause chaos in the English Football League.

Cardiff’s Sky Bet Championship game at home to Coventry has been called off, in addition to Stoke’s visit to Barnsley.

League Two fixtures between Northampton and Walsall, Newport and Forest Green, Bradford and Harrogate, and Bristol Rovers and Sutton also need to be rearranged.

And numerous EFL games have been postponed during the past week following an increased transmission rate of the Omicron variant.

This past weekend, only 16 of the original 35 matches went ahead.

Cardiff confirmed Sunday’s scheduled visit of the Sky Blues would not go ahead due to ‘several cases of Covid-19’ among their playing squad and staff, before Stoke announced similar news later on Monday afternoon.

In the fourth tier, outbreaks at Northampton, Forest Green, Exeter, Bradford and Bristol Rovers led to the five postponements.

Table-topping Forest Green, who sit four points clear of second-placed Northampton, have now seen their last three fixtures called off.
