SWINDON Town head coach Ben Garner said his team “should have been out of sight” before a injury-time equaliser snatched a point for nine-man Colchester United at the JobServe Community Stadium on Saturday.

Late on during a controlled but uninspiring display from Town, Harry McKirdy bundled the game’s first goal prior to red cards for Colchester United’s Shamal George and Luke Chambers.

With Town hopeful of seeing the game out and taking a scrappy 1-0 back to Wiltshire, the nine men poked home in the 92nd minute to break the hearts of the 600 travelling fans.

Asked how a result occurs in that nature, Garner replied: “good question. There is huge, huge frustration from us.

“We don’t defend a set-piece at the end 11v9, and it costs us points. But saying that, we should have been out of sight. We should have had more goals.

“They’ve not done a thing all game, we were completely dominant. There were three penalties in the game, and we don’t get any of them. It’s very, very frustrating overall.”

Colchester had just six shots in total with two on target as struggling United barely laid a glove on their visitors.

Meanwhile, Swindon had 69 per cent possession as well as 11 shots – six of which were on target – yet the promotion hopefuls failed to take three points against a side which is battling to retain it’s Football League status.

Attempting to explain how the late goal occurred, Garner said United’s fewer players actually caused a bit of confusion within his team.

He said: “The fact that they were down to nine caused a little bit of confusion because a couple of our lads have changed markers, and then we’ve ended up with an extra zonal player in there too.

“We’ve ended up between jobs, and the lad has snuck in to score. That’s on us – it shouldn’t have happened.

“I don’t think we defended the free-kick or the first corner well enough, and they’ve scored from the second corner. We should never be in that situation.”
