SWINDON Supermarine celebrated Non-League Day with a thumping 3-0 victory over play-off chasing Yate Town in Sothern League Premier South on Saturday.

Kieran Phillips opened the scoring for Marine prior to a double from Henry Spalding which helped lift the Webbswood Stadium outfit up to 15th and further away from relegation trouble.

While the afternoon ended well for Lee Spalding’s men, it threatened to begin on a sourer note when Yate created a golden opportunity to score inside the first 10 minutes.

Will Tunnicliff crossed into the middle for James Harding, but the striker somehow headed over from close range when it appeared easier to score.

Marine almost instantly made their hosts pay after Tom Sharpe picked out Phillips around the halfway line, and the Bristol Rovers loanee netted his 14th goal of the season by drilling into the far corner after reaching the box.

The visitors were buoyed by the first goal, and they scored a second in the 32nd minute when home goalkeeper Andy Hannah scuffed a pass straight to Phillips. The striker found Spalding to his left, and the manager’s son worked some space before shooting low past the home stopper.

Yate almost pulled one back when Pierce Mitchell slipped and presented a one-on-one chance to Harding, but the defender heroically scampered back to tackle the striker and prevent the shot from being taken.

In first-half stoppage time, Marine took full advantage of the let-off to go three up. Phillips ran down the right before crossing onto the head of Spalding. Netting his 12th of the season, the striker glanced in at the near post before unleashing Cristiano Ronaldo’s trademark celebration and earning a yellow card for removing his shirt in the process.

Harry Williams, Zack Kotwics, and Spalding tested Hannah in the second half, but the goalkeeper pulled off a number of smart saves to maintain the 3-0 scoreline.

Not to be outdone, Martin Horsell pulled off a full-length diving save to turn Joe Tumelty’s vicious strike from range wide as Marine claimed all three points.

Elsewhere, Highworth Town lost 4-0 away to Sholing in Southern League Division One South.

Meanwhile, Royal Wootton Bassett Town saw off Shrivenham 3-0 in the second round of the Hellenic League Challenge Cup on Saturday.

All square at the break, a brace from Khedive McIntosh pushed Sam Collier’s men into a comfortable lead before John Mills placed the cherry on top of the cake with a late third.
