SWINDON Town goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott has helped Ghana qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Town's number one helped the Black Stars to an away-goals victory over Nigeria on Tuesday night.

Arsenal's Thomas Partey notched the all-important strike for Ghana early on as the two-legged affair between the giants of African football ended 1-1.

Wollacott followed up a priceless clean sheet in Kumasi, Ghana on Friday with an assured performance in Abuja, Nigeria - only being beaten by William Troost-Ekong's 22nd-minute penalty - to become just the fourth Swindon player to go to a World Cup while at SN1, should he sign a new contract with Ben Garner's men.

The 25-year-old sees his current deal run out in the summer, though it is understood Town remain very keen to tie the stopper down to a new contract as soon as possible.

The late Alan McLoughlin was the first Swindon player to go to a World Cup in 1990 with the Republic of Ireland before Jan Åge Fjørtoft followed suit in 1994 with Norway.

Massimo Luongo travelled with the Australia squad to the 2014 World Cup and featured on the bench for all three of the Socceroos' matches in Brazil.

Wollacott was only forced to make three saves in total over the two legs against Nigeria, but he rarely looked in danger and should have cemented his place as his country's number one in Qatar thanks to a string of confident performances since being called up at the start of the season.

Town congratulated both Wollacott and Ghana for qualifying for the upcoming World Cup and said the club "cannot wait to watch both on the biggest stage later this year."

Wollacott may not be the only Swindon player representing his country in Qatar later this year, however, after Jonny Williams watched his Wales teammates squeeze past Austria at the Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday night.

Two sensational strikes from Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale cancelled out Marcel Sabitzer's deflected shot to lead Robert Page's men into a play-off final against either Scotland or Ukraine later this year.

Williams is another Town squad member whose contract expires in the summer, but should he agree to stay in Wiltshire once again then Swindon's list of World-Cup representatives would grow to five.

The draw for the group stages of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar takes place at 5pm on Friday.
