SWINDON Town striker Harry McKirdy has been overlooked by his peers in the Professional Footballers Association’s League Two Team Of The Season.

Town’s top scorer did not make the XI voted on by fellow PFA members, despite netting 23 goals and achieving 10 assists – the first time McKirdy had passed 20 strikes in his career.

The controversy behind some selections could be explained by the fact voting was carried out midway through the season and not after the majority of the campaign had been completed.

According to Sky Sports: “The shortlists for selections were compiled by members of the players' trade union in January and then voted for by other players in the respective leagues.”

Eventual champions Forest Green Rovers saw five players included in the best XI, with Kane Wilson, Ebou Adams, Nicky Cadden, Jamille Matt, and Matt Stevens all being named.

In a statement announcing the news on the PFA’s website, it said: “Forwards Matty Stevens and Jamille Matt took second and fourth positions on the league’s top goal scorer table, with 23 and 19 goals apiece.

“The team’s ambition and resolve was evident all season and saw them finish on level points with Exeter City, lifting the trophy on goal difference.

“The front two’s performances, Kane Wilson’s 13 assists, Nicky Cadden’s hat-trick against Crawley Town and 107 tackles from Ebrima Adams, rightfully earned each of them a spot as part of the 2022 PFA League Two Team of the Year.”

Unsurprisingly, the meanest defence in the division – Northampton Town – saw two defenders and a goalkeeper named.

Liam Roberts took the number one jersey while teammates Fraser Horsfall and Jon Guthrie featured at the back.

Matt Jay was included from second place Exeter City, but fans’ favourite Timothee Dieng missed out.

The two other clubs to have lone representatives were Tranmere Rovers and Newport County. Peter Clarke made it a double celebration on a personal level after being named in the EFL’s League Two Team of the Season alongside McKirdy a few weeks ago.

League Two’s top scorer, Dom Telford, took the final spot ahead of McKirdy despite scoring just once in the final 13 games as County’s season fizzled out.
