Former Swindon Town striker Andy Williams has signed for the club’s League Two rivals Walsall on a one-year deal.

Williams – who scored 35 goals in 105 games for Swindon between 2012-15 – agreed a contract with Mike Flynn’s side on Wednesday and will come up against old clubs Northampton Town and Doncaster Rovers in League Two this coming season.

The 35-year-old was released by Cheltenham Town last month and has played almost 700 career games for seven different clubs.

The Saddlers continued their busy start to the summer transfer window by clinching a deal for Cambridge United defender Liam Bennett on loan.

The 20-year-old agreed a season-long loan with Walsall having played 10 times for the U's last season.

Meanwhile, Rochdale signed ex-Walsall and Port Vale striker Devante Rodney on a two-year deal.

Rodney agreed a two-and-a-half-year contract at the Banks’ Stadium in January but struggled to break into the first team and chose to move on prior to Walsall bringing in Williams.

The former Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday youngster started just two League Two matches last season, coming off the bench 12 times without scoring.

Grimsby Town made their first signing of the summer after winning promotion back to the Football League, bringing in defender Niall Maher on a two-year contract.

The 26-year-old played 43 times for the Shaymen last season but turned down a new deal with the National League side in order to pursue an opportunity with the EFL club.

Crewe Alexandra added another former Swindon midfielder to their ranks after the recent arrival of Conor Thomas when announcing a deal for Charlie Colkett on Tuesday.

The ex-England Under-20 international signed for Crewe on a two-year contract following his release by Cheltenham at the end of last season.

Colkett played 19 times for Town during the 2016-17 campaign, scoring just once while providing five assists.

Having started at Chelsea, the 25-year-old has also enjoyed spells at Bristol Rovers, Shrewsbury Town, Vitesse Arnhem, and Ostersunds.

Tranmere Rovers signed former Reading defender Ethan Bristow on a two-year contract.

The 20-year-old, who predominantly plays left-back, made 11 senior appearances for the Royals after progressing through a scholarship before being released at the end of last season.

Harrogate Town have acquired Stephen Dooley from League Two rivals Rochdale on a two-year contract.

The 30-year-old midfielder played over 100 times for Dale but told his new club’s website that he wants to “crack on now” in North Yorkshire.

Beaten League Two play-off finalists Mansfield Town have strengthened their midfield options after signing midfielder Hiram Boateng on a three-year deal following his release from MK Dons.

The 26-year-old – who started his career with Crystal Palace – featured 37 times last term, helping MK Dons reach the League One play-offs.
