SWINDON Town head coach Scott Lindsey has suggested the club is unlikely to sign a new striker until next week at the earliest.

Fans have been crying out for at least one fresh face to bolster a forward line which has struggled for goals in the early part of the season.

Jacob Wakeling scored Town’s first and only goal in four games against Carlisle United on Saturday, ending a run of over 300 minutes without registering.

But ahead of Swindon’s League Two contest against a Leyton Orient side which has yet to concede in League Two action, Lindsey indicated there are no imminent signings to help boost a shy frontline.

Asked about the club’s search for a new striker, Lindsey said: “It’s still ongoing and we’re working very hard.

“It’s difficult in the middle of these Saturday-Tuesday games because they come thick and fast, and you’re constantly preparing then recovering, preparing then recovering.

“You’re trying to do your work in terms of making sure the team is really ready to play the next game, making sure we’re organised, while also dipping into the recruitment side of it as well.

“Hopefully, after the Rochdale game when we’ve got a clear week, we can really get to grips with getting that sorted.”

Town have been on the hunt for new attacking faces for a number of weeks now without success.

Lindsey’s men have until September 1 to add a contracted professional to their squad or they will be scouring the free-agent market.

Asked whether there were any pangs of concern, given the limited time left in the transfer window, the Town boss said: “There’s no concerns because we’ve already identified targets.

“We’ve got people we’re looking at, and we’re speaking to clubs and agents to make sure they’re the right fit.

“We have to take our time because we don’t want to rush this one. We want to make sure this one is right, and we have to make sure that we do our work in the background. We’re not worried in any shape or form.”

Lindsey did not disclose any potential names, but many fans are hoping Swindon make a late swoop for former loanee Tyreece Simpson.

Championship side Huddersfield Town are showing the strongest interest, according to the East Anglian Daily Times, but Ipswich are thought to have several suitors asking about Simpson and could use him as a makeweight in a potential swap deal.
