SWINDON Town head coach Scott Lindsey has spoken of the difficulties behind the club’s latest search for a new striker.

The Town boss is on the hunt for someone “different to what we’ve currently got” in a bid to help overcome the goal-scoring troubles that have blighted Swindon in the opening few weeks of the new campaign.

Lindsey’s men have scored just two goals in five games so far, and the widespread consensus is that attacking reinforcements are needed in order to try and increase that tally.

Town’s head coach admitted the likelihood of the club bringing in a new striker before Saturday is very low.

But asked before Swindon’s League Two clash with Rochdale how many players the club has looked at historically and are looking at now, Lindsey revealed it is probably more than most would have imagined.

He said: “Strikers are funny ones because there aren’t that many that kind of fit the whole package for us.

“There are not that many good ones, it’s quite a skinny market.

“We probably look at 20 players at one time, which is a lot for one place when you think about it.

“But it is quite a skinny market, it’s a hard position to fill. You speak to a lot of managers, coaches, various people in the game and ask: “what are you looking for?” Everyone is looking for a striker.

“It’s a skinny market with an awful lot of buyers, so it is a difficult one.”

While the likes of Football Manager and FIFA make buying players appear as easy as picking fruit, Lindsey clarified that real life could not be farther from those virtual spaces.

The Town boss said those who believe finding a new striker is as simple as finding the one you like and stumping up the cash are sadly mistaken.

Lindsey said: “I wish it was that easy! If it was that easy, we would have had it done by now, but it’s not. It’s a lot of work.

The Town boss went on to explain how complicated the process really is.

He said: “We have to do a lot of due diligence in the background to make sure that A, they fit the remit of what we’re looking for, B, they’re the right kind of person as well, and C, the finances have to fit too.

“It takes a lot of time and effort. I wish it was like going shopping, but unfortunately, it’s not.”
