SWINDON Supermarine responded to a home league defeat against Winchester City by thrashing their rivals 5-0 in the first round of the FA Trophy in Hampshire on Saturday.

Seven days after losing the club’s unbeaten record at the Webbswood Stadium in Southern League Premier South courtesy of a 2-1 reverse against Winchester, Lee Spalding’s men exacted revenge in an unflinching style to book their spot in round two.

Harry Williams brought up 50 goals for the club via a brace, while Conor McDonagh, Brad Hooper, and Zack Kotwica all found the net for a dominant Marine side.

The Wiltshire club dominated possession early on, and it was no surprise when they eventually broke through in the 19th minute. Sam Turl’s cross was met by James Harding at the back post, and his header back across was slammed home by Williams for his 17th of the season.

Shortly after, Marine made it two when Jamie Edge’s floated free-kick was headed down and across by Mat Liddiard for McDonagh to stoop and nod into the net.

Following a failed penalty appeal for either side and the half-time interval, Spalding’s men killed the tie off with 20 minutes to go. A long through ball was latched into by Williams, and he dinked the ball past the goalkeeper before collecting his initial effort and sliding the ball home.

After Spalding had made a triple substitution late on, the Wiltshire club made it four in the 80th minute. Williams saw his shot saved and half-cleared by Winchester, only for Hooper to hammer past the home side’s defence from just outside the box.

And in the 88th minute, the goal-scoring was complete after substitute Sal Abubakar laid the ball across for Kotwica to drive into the net.

Elsewhere, in Southern League Division One Central, Highworth Town lost 4-1 to leaders Berkhampstead.

Ollie Case hit the bar early on for Gareth Davies’ men before Sol Pryce converted a Jack Carter cross to put the Worthians in front.

But Luke Andrews rifled home a long-range equaliser, and Tommy Smith prodded home before half-time to turn the game around for Berkhampstead.

Jon Lacey scored the visitors’ third at the end of an efficient counter-attack, an Adam Watkins rounded off the scoring in the 90th minute.

In the Hellenic League Premier Division, Royal Wootton Bassett Town drew 1-1 with third-place Westfields.

Debutant Matt Jones fired in on the turn from a Tommy Ouldridge cross in the 77th minute to cancel out Dan Stoneman’s earlier opener.

There was then further late drama as Bassett were reduced to ten men courtesy of a straight red card for Adam Corcoran. And Dave Bampton was sent off post-match for foul and abusive language.
