ROYAL Wootton Bassett Town won a thrilling FA Vase second-round tie away at Wellington on penalties at the weekend to equal their best ever run in the competition.

Tommy Ouldridge curled home from a tight angle early on to give Sam Collier’s men the advantage on their travels, only for Wellington’s Henry Woodward to arrow a half-volley into the corner shortly after.

And on the stroke of half time, Jake Quick registered his team’s second goal as he produced a fine snap finish on the turn into the top corner.

Bassett threw everything at Wellington in the second half, and they eventually earned their reward nine minutes from time when Matt Jones’ fizzing low cross was turned into his own net by Quick.

With penalties required to separate the two teams, Wellington’s Stefan Phillips rattled the post with the first spot-kick.

Bassett then scored all five to set up a third-round tie with Wiltshire rivals Corsham Town.

Elsewhere, Swindon Supermarine moved into the Southern League Premier South play-off spots with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over local rivals Yate Town at the Webbswood Stadium on Saturday.

With several players from both sides having recently swapped clubs in the summer, the first meeting was always going to be a lively and tight affair.

The first half was deadlocked with Marine dominating possession but unable to find a way past former goalkeeper Martin Horsell in the Yate goal.

Henry Spalding and former Yate man Joe Tumelty were denied by the big custodian before the turning point arrived as the half drew to an end.

A late challenge on George Dowling by Darren Mullings saw the Bluebells midfielder dismissed, consequently setting up a second half onslaught on the Yate goal.

The visitors held on bravely for almost 70 minutes before Marine’s top scorer Harry Williams netted his 20th of the campaign. He was the fastest to react after a Matt Liddiard header bounced off Horsell.

Substitute Conor McDonagh wrapped up the points with eight minutes left. Williams turned from scorer to provider, playing the ball through for McDonagh to round Horsell and slide it into the net for his second in three games.

Meanwhile, Highworth Town were thumped 5-1 by Southern League Division One South leaders Kidlington in Oxfordshire on Saturday.

In the first competitive meeting for years since the pair’s Hellenic League days, Kidlington rarely looked troubled and were 2-0 up at half-time following goals from Connor Mattimore and Connor Ferguson.

Ryan Knight sealed the result early in the second half before Mattimore and Ferguson both netted a brace midway through. Sol Pryce scored a consolation late on for the Worthians.
