PROSPECTIVE head coach Jody Morris will believe he can achieve success with Swindon Town after watching the Robins’ 3-3 draw with Gillingham from the stands on Saturday, according to interim boss Gav Gunning.

The former Chelsea and Derby County assistant was sat in the directors’ box as Jonny Williams gave Swindon a first-minute lead at the County Ground in front of 10,259.

The 9,300 Town fans quickly went from delighted to stunned, though, as goals from Timothee Dieng, Will Wright - who netted from the spot – and Tom Nichols put Gillingham 3-1 ahead with less than 14 minutes on the clock.

Gunning rang the changes at the break and brought on three fresh players – including a debut for midfielder Jake Cain – as Town set about fighting back.

Charlie Austin drilled home a penalty to bring the hosts back within one, and the 32-year-old rolled back the years late on to head home and snatch a point.

Despite Saidou Khan’s late red card, Swindon could have completed a spectacular comeback in front of their new boss when Rushian Hepburn-Murphy was set through one-on-one in the 90th minute.

But with Ronan Darcy to his right, the striker opted to go alone and was well kept out by Glen Morris in the Gills’ goal.

Discussing what boss-to-be Morris might have made of what he witnessed, Gunning said: “I think he’ll be buzzing with the second half.

“He’ll probably pull the curtain over the first half, but the second-half performance, he’ll see it as a chance for him to do something.

“We’re in a good place, so we’ll see what happens. But like I’ve said before, performances are key and results will take care of themselves.

“You might have a game like Saturday where – in the second half, we should score five or six goals, but we don’t.

“We get a point, which is better than zero I suppose, but when it goes to 3-3 we’ve got to win that game.

“We’re absolutely carving them in two, even when we go down to 10 men. But you can only be proud of that second-half performance.”

Gunning also briefly discussed the club’s transfer plans between Saturday night and 72 hours later.

He said: “We’ll see if anybody leaves, you never know what’s going to happen. People might leave, people might come in.

“It’ll be something to recap in the next two or three days, and we’ll go from there. The new gaffer coming in has fantastic pedigree, so he knows the script.”
